Deaftronics (Pty) Ltd

Deaftronics developed the first rechargeable hearing aid battery, which lasts for 2-3 years and can be used in 80% of hearing aids on the market today. It is solar powered and can be charged via the sun, household light, or a cell phone plug.

Deaftronics has redefined hearing and brought an innovative solution to those that are hearing impaired, especially in developing countries. A significant number of lithium batteries provided by NGOs and governments to Africans die in their first month. In low economic environments, the weekly purchase of hearing aid batteries can be challenging (e.g. cost prohibitive or locally not available). The solar chargeable hearing aid is appropriate technology for low economic settings, eliminating this challenge and ensuring the continued use of the hearing aid. The impact is significant and can be life changing: If hearing impairments are detected and addressed at an early age, it can prevent speech impediments (and subsequent marginalization of an individual) and ensures that the child can fully benefit from education through regular local schools rather than falling behind due to the hearing impairment. Deaftronics further stands out in the local assembly of the hearing aids, which creates jobs. Specifically, Deaftronics employs many hearing impaired persons, not only in production, but also in their leadership. In addition, Deaftronics trained initiatives in Brazil, Jordan, and South Africa in the assembly of the hearing aids, sharing its technology and creating broader access beyond the scope of the company.
