Karyn Smith, Member of the U.S. Board of Advisors, Women for Women International

Karyn has spent her career working with and for high growth companies, and previously served as Chief Legal Officer for Snyk, a Cloud 100 developer security company, where she led the global legal and compliance team.  Prior to Snyk, Karyn was General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for Twilio (NYSE:TWLO), which she joined in 2014 as its first attorney.  During her time at Twilio, Karyn built the legal team from one person when she joined to more than 140 attorneys and legal professionals, supporting Twilio’s growth from less than $100M in ARR in 2014 to nearly $3B in 2021, and from 275 employees to 7,500 employees.  Karyn also led Twilio’s Trust and Security team for several years, and served as interim Chief People Officer during Twilio’s first year as a public company.

Prior to Twilio, Karyn was Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA), an online game company, where she oversaw all corporate matters and led Zynga through its $1B IPO in 2011. Prior to Zynga, Karyn was a partner of Cooley LLP, an AmLaw 100 firm, where she represented emerging growth companies at all stages of growth, from formation through liquidity event and beyond, with a particular specialty in IPOs, guiding dozens of companies through public offerings.

Karyn also sits on the board of Icertis, a Cloud 100 contract lifecycle management company, and is a founding member of Chief, a network for senior women leaders, and a member of The Economic Club of Washington, DC.  She previously sat on the boards of the Business Software Alliance and USTelecom.

Karyn earned her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and her JD cum laude from Santa Clara University School of Law.

Karyn lives with her family in Washington, D.C. and is passionate about yoga, hiking, reading, travel and providing belly rubs on demand to the family dog.
