Title: Strategic Communications Manager
Reports To: Director of Communications

Job Summary

The strategic communications manager leads media outreach, thought leadership, and public relations work, writes some of Halcyon’s most visible content, and is responsible for contributing to the development and execution of a cohesive long-term strategy for Halcyon’s communications in line with brand, mission, and programming.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy and execution for all media relations activities, including building a media relations plan, identifying newsworthy opportunities, pitching media, developing relationships with key reporters, conducting media training as needed for Halcyon team members and Halcyon fellows, and working with reporters on any placements in progress to maximize storytelling opportunities.
  • Lead thought leadership efforts for Halcyon’s senior leadership team, including identifying events to participate in and placing senior leaders as event attendees, panelists, keynote speakers, etc. Align with media relations to identify moments for by-line thought leadership placements in target outlets.
  • Write key messages and talking points, website language, email language, Halcyon’s annual report, and other high visibility products, possibly including scripting major events and video productions, speechwriting, writing for marketing materials, ghost writing op-eds, research products, and any other major writing assignments in line with Halcyon’s communications strategy.
  • Support the biannual process of building a communications plan, identifying organizational priorities and building out a strategy to leverage Halcyon’s assets in pursuit of those priorities.
  • Assist in diverse Halcyon activities, including staffing program events, recognizing that teamwork depends on occasionally stepping outside one’s direct responsibilities to support the team’s broader goals.

Minimum Education/Experience Required  

Four years of communications experience required; and knowledge of the nonprofit sector preferred, but not required. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required.

  • Proven ability to communicate articulately and creatively.
  • Expert-level writing skills, including grammar and punctuation as well as ability to pick up a voice and extend it across a variety of platforms.
  • Experience pitching stories to media, or enthusiasm for learning the art of media relations.
  • Thought leadership experience such as authoring by-line pieces or identifying events for senior team members to speak at or participate in, or enthusiasm for building such experience.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently to achieve common objectives.
  • High computer competency, including knowledge of Microsoft Office, Dropbox, and Google apps.
  • Comfortable interacting with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Solid problem-solving skills including identifying and recommending solutions.
  • Ability to work with multiple priorities and deadlines and to pitch in where needed.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, good sense of humor.

Facilities Management Contractor

Scope of Work

Halcyon is actively looking for a skilled and dependable Facilities Management Contractor to perform contract services at the Halcyon facility in Washington, DC.  You will be responsible for overseeing all upkeep and performing repair duties including identifying the need for repairs, responding to facilities requests from team members and fellows, coordinating move-in/move-out responsibilities in the residences, coordinating with contractors on larger projects, and regular servicing of Halcyon equipment.

To be an effective Facilities Management Contractor, you will be skilled and diligent, with outstanding problem-solving abilities. Skillful hands, good physical stamina, and strong technical knowledge are important parts of the successful candidates’ talents.

The Facilities Management Contractor will report to Halcyon’s Chief Operating Officer.

Description of Halcyon Facility

Halcyon is located in the historic neighborhood of Georgetown in Washington, DC.  The facility is a 30,000 square-foot house that includes office space for the Halcyon team, & residences for the incubator fellows, event space, meeting rooms, kitchens, and other common areas.  Outdoor space includes a landscaped lawn, pool area, meeting spaces, and brick/flagstone walkways.

The selected candidate will be able to perform the following duties on a regular basis:

  • Conduct daily and weekly inspections to ensure the facilities are secure, properly cleaned and maintained.
  • Complete basic tasks including painting touchups, changing lightbulbs, and minor fixes and hardware installations.
  • Oversee and manage the cleaning of the facilities and landscaping by outside contractors.
  • Detect and report the need for major maintenance repairs.
  • Regularly check community spaces to identify issues with litter, mechanical failure, leaks, or breakdowns.
  • Respond to team members and fellow maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of outside spaces such as the parking lot, sidewalks, backyard, and pool area.
  • Ensure trash removal by DC Public Works.
  • Conduct performance assessments of appliances, such as refrigerators, microwaves, stoves, ovens, icemakers, and coffee makers.
  • Yard clean-up of fallen branches, leaves, grass trimming in between landscaper visits.
  • Ensure the interior and exterior facility structural components are safe and in good condition.

The selected candidate will be able to perform the following duties on an as-needed basis:

  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the assessment of ongoing or changing requirements to maintain the building.
  • Perform minor repairs on company machinery, equipment, or appliances
  • Manage larger repairs through outside maintenance contractors.
  • Manage the move-in and move-out activities associated with the residential occupants when scheduled.
  • Oversee the sprinkler system.
  • Provide snow and ice removal during inclement weather, prior to team arrivals.
  • Have HVAC knowledge and the ability to provide clear instructions to maintenance contractors.
  • Change the HVAC filters as required by the specs of the units.
  • Assist the Director of Events with the set-up and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other furniture in advance of small and large events.
  • Be on-call as Halcyon’s primary contact for all facility emergencies.


  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification required.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ working experience in a similar role.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Basic experience in repairing plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to work with hardware, tools, and power equipment.
  • Have access to a vehicle and driver’s license for light transport.
  • Extremely organized with effective communication skills.
  • Detail-orientated with an aptitude for problem-solving.


$25.00 + per hour, based on experience. Estimated 20-25 hours per week.
